Standardni zum objektiv sastavljen od 18 elemenata u 13 grupa, od kojih je jedan potpuno novi i veoma precizan, ekstremni asferični (XA) element, i on je zadužen za neutralisanje hromatskih aberacija i pružanje vrhunske rezolucije - duž čitavog raspona i blende, od jedne do druge ivice kadra. Što se tiče ostalih elemenata, jedan je ED (Extra-low-Dispersion), a jedan Super ED. Dijafragma je realizovana u vidu 9 zaobljenih listića, a prednji element objektiva premazan je Nano AR premazom, koji smanjuje odbljeske i donosi fenomenalan kontrast i bistrinu. Sony 24-70mm GM može još da se pohvali SSM (Super Sonic Wave Motor) motorom, koji poseduje novi set algoritama koji sa velikom brzinom i preciznošću pozicioniraju elemente objektiva. AF motor radi tiho i glatko, što ovaj zum objektiv čini idealnim kako za fotografisanje, tako i za video snimanje. Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM je takođe zaptiven, a prečnik njegovog filtera iznosi 82mm.
