The Fujifilm FinePix XP200 is a tough new waterproof camera featuring a waterproof rating down to 15 metres, a shockproof rating of 2 metres, and built in Wi-Fi to share images from where-ever you are. It's available in a number of colours and records 1080p video at 60fps.
A wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens is the equivalent of 28mm to 140mm and features optical image stabilisation. The 16 megapixel CMOS sensor allows high speed full HD video recording at 60fps for smooth videos, and 10fps continuous shooting.
An LED is included, next to the flash, as well as stereo microphones for video recording. On the back is a 3inch 920k dot screen. High speed video recording can record videos at up to 360fps, although at a reduced resolution.
The camera feels well built with a double locking memory card and battery cover. As you would expect with a tough waterproof camera it feels very tough with a metal and plastic body. Another unique feature is that the camera can be placed vertically on flat surfaces if needed on one side of the camera. There is a good number of controls and buttons on the camera, with quick access to exposure, flash, macro, timer and drive modes as well as a dedicated video button. Gripping the camera can feel a little awkward as there is a very small raised grip at the front with smooth plastic, and a dotted area at the back.
Menus – The menus are split into shooting and setup menus, with the older Fujifilm style menus. We much prefer the menus on some newer Fujifilm cameras. To change what mode you are shooting in, you need to enter the menu and the first option is the shooting mode. This is where you will find the scene modes, as well as HDR, and advanced filter effects.
Battery life - Battery life is rated at 300 shots according to Fujifilm / CIPA test results, this is reasonable for a compact camera. Extended use of Wi-Fi will reduce the number of shots possible with the camera.
Wi-Fi - Using the Fujifilm Camera Application, it's possible to recieve up to 30 photos at a time, browse the camera, geotag photos, and is available for both Android and iOS devices. Settings on the camera can limit the image size sent to the phone, and once the photos are on the smartphone it's possible to share to your favourite social network websites.
Speed - We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

Sample Photos - The portrait photo with flash had quite noticeable red-eye which the camera automatically detected and then removed, and the photo isn't the sharpest we've seen from a compact.

Lens Performance - Images from the XP200 show good colour, however detail appears quite low. Purple fringing is fairly well controlled, although was visible in areas of high contrast. A 9cm macro focus means that you can't get as close to the subject as you can with other compacts, however the camera delivered a pleasing image. Dynamic range appears to be reasonable for a compact camera, and there is a dedicated HDR shooting mode for enhanced dynamic range, although this is at a reduced resolution.
ISO Noise Performance - The ISO Range is ISO100 to ISO3200 at full resolution, with ISO6400 available at a reduced resolution. Some noise is visible at the lowest ISO settings of ISO100 and ISO200, and noise becomes more noticeable at ISO400. Noise increases at ISO800, with the loss of detail, which continues at ISO1600. ISO3200 (and ISO6400) is best avoided, unless you plan on resizing the images for the web.
White Balance Performance - Auto White Balance (AWB) gives a warm result under tungsten lighting with the tungsten preset giving a much better result. AWB performs reasonably well under fluorescent lighting with the fluorescent preset giving a warm result.

Panorama mode - Panoramic 120, 180, and 360 is available where you simply pan the camera around. Stitching is quite good, however there was some ghosting and detail is fairly low.
Digital Filters - There are a number of scene modes and digital filters available, a number of them are shown above. There are also a number of film modes available including Standard, Chrome, Black and White and Sepia.
Video - The camera records full HD video with stereo sound at 60fps, as well as 720p at 60fps, VGA at 30fps or 120fps,320x240 at 240fps, and 224x168 at 360fps. Optical zoom is available while recording, as well as continuous focus. The LED illuminator can be switched on and off, and can be used when recording videos. An underwater video can be found on the ePHOTOzine YouTube channel.
